Siemens Energy bags $127mn major substation contract in Bahrain

The project involves the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the high-voltage facility

Siemens Energy has secured a contract worth 48.1 million Bahraini dinars ($127 million) from Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) to build a 400-kilovolt (kV) grid substation in the Sitra Industrial Area, the German company said on Sunday.

The project, tied to Bahrain’s planned Sitra Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP), will involve the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the high-voltage facility. Scope includes 400kV and 220kV gas-insulated switchgear, 21kV switchgear, control and telecom systems, as well as associated cabling and civil works, including building services and security systems.

Siemens Energy was the sole bidder for the tender, which EWA issued in December 2024. At the time, the company submitted a proposal valued at 59m dinars ($157m).

The Sitra IWPP is part of Bahrain’s strategy to expand its power and water infrastructure.

EWA has prequalified nine developers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, China, South Korea and Japan for the plant, according to earlier reports.
