DEWA, Siemens Energy to expand AI power plant project in Dubai

New deal follows the success of the project’s first phase, which delivered a 2.2% boost in efficiency and fuel savings

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a new agreement with Siemens Energy to roll out the second phase of its artificial intelligence (AI) Plant Intelligent Controller at the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Complex, the UAE’s largest power plant.

The deal, announced during the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) in Dubai, follows the success of the project’s first phase, which delivered a 2.2% boost in efficiency and fuel savings, while cutting carbon emissions by around 35,000 tonnes per power block annually.

Phase two will see the technology deployed at M-Station Power Blocks 20 and 30, building on the AI controller’s use of digital twin and closed-loop systems to optimise plant performance and reduce fuel consumption.

DEWA chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said the initiative aligned with Dubai’s push to become “the world’s first AI-native utility” and to advance its net-zero 2050 target.

Waheed Abbasi, Siemens Energy’s senior vice president for gas services in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, described AI as “a catalyst for digital transformation in the energy sector.”
