PowerChina unit breaks ground on 200 MW wind power project in Oman

The facility will supply power to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) as part of efforts to decarbonise Oman's hydrocarbon sector

China Hydropower Engineering Bureau No. 10, a subsidiary of state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), has begun construction on the 200-megawatt Riyah Wind Power Project in Oman.

The facility, the first in the country where oil and gas companies will be the sole electricity purchasers, will supply power to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) as part of efforts to decarbonise the sultanate’s hydrocarbon sector.

The project comprises two 100 MW plants — Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 — located northeast of Tumlet in a region with average wind speeds of 8 metres per second. Riyah-1 is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026 and Riyah-2 by year-end 2026.

Once operational, the wind farms are expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 740,000 tonnes a year and reduce natural gas use by 380 million cubic metres, supporting Oman’s Vision 2040 and net-zero 2050 targets.
