Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has awarded a seven-year maintenance contract valued at $161.1 million to Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) through its subsidiary TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd (TNB REMACO), in partnership with Kuwait-based Al Dhow Engineering.
The contract covers comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul services at the Sabiya Power Generation and Water Distillation Plant, located approximately 65 kilometers from Kuwait City.
The facility comprises four oil- and gas-powered units with a combined generation capacity of 299.4 megawatts, playing a vital role in Kuwait’s energy infrastructure.
The agreement was formalized on March 12, 2025, at the National Bank of Kuwait Head Office, with key executives from TNB and Al Dhow Engineering in attendance.
This contract adds to TNB REMACO’s growing portfolio in Kuwait, where the company has been active since 2013. Currently, TNB REMACO oversees 11 active projects in the country, with a cumulative value exceeding RM4.54 billion.
To date, 16 TNB specialists have been deployed to Kuwait, with six currently managing ongoing operations.
The Sabiya Power Plant, commissioned between 1998 and 2002, has undergone several modernization efforts to enhance its efficiency and capacity.
In recent years, Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was awarded a long-term contract to upgrade eight steam turbines and generators at the plant, aiming to extend their operational life by up to 20 years.
Also, GE Vernova completed the modernization of four gas turbines at the facility, resulting in a combined increase in power production of up to 70 megawatts without additional fuel consumption.
Kuwait’s Vision 2035 seeks to modernize the country’s infrastructure and diversify its energy sources. The Sabiya Power Plant, being the largest in Kuwait, plays a crucial role in meeting the nation’s electricity demands, especially during peak periods.
