Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has joined forces with Nakheel, part of Dubai Holding’s real estate arm, to construct two state-of-the-art power substations worth AED 270 million ($73.5 million) on Palm Jebel Ali.
The substations, scheduled for completion alongside the new luxury villas, will provide reliable power across the landmark development, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to sustainable and advanced infrastructure.
The substations will supply power to multiple fronds and the spine of Palm Jebel Ali, a development that stretches over seven islands and includes 16 fronds with more than 90 kilometers of beachfront.
The project will support Dubai’s expanding need for reliable, high-capacity infrastructure as part of the larger Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
When completed, Palm Jebel Ali is set to become a model for luxury waterfront living, encompassing residential, retail, hospitality, and leisure spaces within a framework of smart city technologies and sustainable practices.
“We are confident that DEWA, as our strategic partner, will provide the high-quality infrastructure necessary to shape the prestigious Palm Jebel Ali. This is a symbol of Dubai’s ambition to create exceptional developments that make a lasting impact on the global stage. Palm Jebel Ali exemplifies our commitment to building premier waterfront living for global citizens,” said Nasser Al Awadhi, Chief Land Estates Officer of Dubai Holding, stressing the significance of DEWA’s expertise in achieving Nakheel’s vision.
The substations, each rated at 132/11 kV with a combined capacity of 400 megavolt-amperes (MVA), will be critical in meeting the power demands of Palm Jebel Ali.
DEWA’s role in managing the project will include the tendering, awarding, and construction processes to ensure the facilities are delivered on time and aligned with the luxury villa development schedule.
Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, highlighted the project’s alignment with Dubai’s sustainability goals: “Dubai Holding Real Estate, a key partner, is developing these substations with us to meet the highest standards of quality, sustainability, and safety, using advanced digital technologies.”
“DEWA is committed to expanding world-class infrastructure that enables 100% reliability and availability in Dubai’s power transmission system, which ranks among the best globally in terms of performance,” he added.
Palm Jebel Ali represents a new growth corridor in the Jebel Ali area, aiming to become a benchmark for integrated residential and leisure developments.
In addition to power infrastructure, earlier contracts awarded for the island’s infrastructure include villa construction, public access roads, and marine works, paving the way for Palm Jebel Ali to become a landmark in Dubai’s future landscape.
Revealed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Palm Jebel Ali aims to attract new residents, investors, and tourists alike, supporting Dubai’s long-term economic vision.
The development’s mix of high-end residential and recreational facilities is designed to cater to diverse lifestyles, with pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, scenic waterfronts, and extensive recreational spaces.
Palm Jebel Ali will serve as a foundation for the broader goals set forth in Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, which aims to cement the emirate’s position as a leader in economic sustainability and a global lifestyle destination.
The project’s focus on smart city technology and sustainable urban planning aligns with Dubai’s ambition to be at the forefront of environmental and infrastructural innovation, providing a blueprint for future development across the region.
