ACWA Power, GIC sign $4 bn deal for Kuwait’s largest power and water plant

The plant will run primarily on liquefied natural gas and high-pressure natural gas

ACWA Power and Kuwait’s Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) have signed a $4 billion agreement to develop the Az Zour North Phase 2 and 3 Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP), the country’s largest such facility, Kuwait’s public-private partnership authority said on Sunday.

The deal, signed with the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) in coordination with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy (MEWRE), covers the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of a plant capable of producing at least 2,700 megawatts of electricity and 120 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of desalinated water.

Located about 100 km south of Kuwait City on the Arabian Gulf coast, the plant will run primarily on liquefied natural gas and high-pressure natural gas, with gas oil as backup. It will be built adjacent to the existing Az Zour North Phase 1 facility, which is already in operation.
