ENGIE partners with Saudi Arabia’s Al Jouf Cement to build 22 MWp solar project

The project will cover an area of 420,000 square meters and is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy-intensive cement industry while supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 renewable energy objectives.

ENGIE has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Saudi Arabia’s Al Jouf Cement Company (AJCC) to develop a 22 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at AJCC’s cement facility near Turaif in the Kingdom’s Northern Borders Province.

The project will cover an area of 420,000 square meters and is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy-intensive cement industry while supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 renewable energy objectives.

The solar PV plant is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 1.48 million tons over its 25-year operational lifespan.

By generating on-site renewable power, the plant will help Al Jouf Cement reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while ensuring stable energy costs under the fixed-rate PPA agreement.

The system is tailored to meet AJCC’s operational needs and will integrate state-of-the-art technology, including rooftop and ground-mounted installations, to optimize energy generation.

ENGIE will manage the project end-to-end, covering design, development, construction, and ongoing maintenance.

Saudi Arabia is actively pushing for the diversification of energy resources and collaborating with the private sector to decarbonize industries as part of a broader strategy to achieve its net-zero ambitions.

The move aligns with the country’s Vision 2030 goals to transform its economy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Pierre Cheyron, ENGIE’s Managing Director for Energy Solutions in the AMEA region, said the project with Al Jouf Cement aligns with the company’s broader mission to enable carbon neutrality through innovative energy solutions.

“Our collaboration with Al Jouf Cement demonstrates how renewable energy projects can transform energy-intensive industries,” said Cheyron.

ENGIE has been a key player in Saudi Arabia’s energy sector for over 20 years, contributing 7.6 GW of power generation, which is 8% of the Kingdom’s installed capacity.

The company also contributes 1.82 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily, representing 15% of national production.

In recent years, ENGIE has actively expanded its portfolio of renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia as part of its wider commitment to supporting the region’s energy transition and fostering sustainable industrial practices.
