In a bid to advance Oman’s renewable energy targets, LONGi Middle East and Muscat Green Energy (MGE) hosted a workshop on September 18, 2024, during the third edition of the IEEE PowerTalks conference.

The workshop, titled “Driving Oman’s RE2040 Vision, LONGi and Muscat Green Energy Innovation,” was held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre and focused on innovative solar energy solutions to support Oman’s Renewable Energy 2040 (RE2040) vision.

The event, organised in collaboration with IEEE PowerTalks, gathered key stakeholders from the energy sector, including policymakers, industry professionals, and innovators, to discuss Oman’s renewable energy landscape.

The goal was to explore how cutting-edge solar technologies and strategic partnerships can propel the country toward achieving its RE2040 targets.

Oman has set ambitious goals under its RE2040 framework, aiming to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2040. With abundant solar resources, the country is positioned to be a leader in solar energy production in the Middle East.

Oman’s government has placed major emphasis on the development of renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind, as part of its long-term strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependency on natural gas.

LONGi Middle East and MGE, both prominent players in the renewable energy sector, have aligned their efforts to contribute to this national strategy. Through innovative solutions and collaboration, the companies aim to overcome challenges and accelerate the deployment of solar energy projects across Oman.

The workshop opened with presentations from LONGi and MGE, highlighting their respective contributions to Oman’s renewable energy sector. LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, presented “The Future of Solar Energy in Oman,” where it showcased its latest technological advancements, such as high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) modules and solar power solutions tailored to the unique conditions of Oman’s climate. LONGi emphasized the potential of solar technology to meet the growing energy demands of the country while contributing to sustainability.

Following this, Muscat Green Energy presented “Innovative Energy Solutions in Oman,” providing insights into its role in facilitating the country’s energy transition. MGE outlined its renewable energy projects and technological innovations aimed at enhancing the efficiency of solar power generation in Oman. The company also discussed its strategic partnerships with global technology providers like LONGi, which are crucial in driving forward Oman’s clean energy ambitions.

Several important themes emerged during the workshop, with participants stressing the critical role that solar energy will play in meeting Oman’s RE2040 targets. Discussions revolved around the opportunities and challenges within the country’s renewable energy sector, particularly the importance of enhancing solar power infrastructure, addressing regulatory hurdles, and securing financial investments for large-scale solar projects.

One of the key topics was the need for increased cross-industry collaboration and public-private partnerships to advance the renewable energy agenda. Participants highlighted that alignment between government bodies, private companies, and international stakeholders would be essential to ensure the successful implementation of Oman’s renewable energy projects.

The event also underscored the importance of policy coherence, innovation, and knowledge exchange in shaping the country’s sustainable energy future.

The workshop’s conclusion featured a roundtable discussion involving representatives from LONGi, MGE, and IEEE. The interactive session focused on identifying practical solutions to overcome the challenges that solar energy developers face in Oman. These include technical hurdles, such as adapting PV systems to harsh desert conditions, and ensuring the financial viability of large-scale solar projects.

Both LONGi and MGE reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Oman’s renewable energy goals. The companies emphasised their dedication to playing a leading role in the country’s energy transition by providing innovative, sustainable energy solutions.

With solar power emerging as a central pillar of Oman’s energy strategy, the partnerships formed during the IEEE PowerTalks workshop are expected to accelerate the growth of the renewable energy sector in the country.
