Indian water technology company VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) has been awarded a major contract valued at 1.2 billion Saudi riyals ($317 million) for a vital seawater desalination project in Saudi Arabia.
The contract involves the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) of a large-scale seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant in Yanbu.
The contract was granted by the Saudi Water Authority (SWA), previously known as the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).
The desalination plant will have a capacity of 300 million liters per day (MLD), which is equivalent to 300,000 cubic meters per day (m³/day).
The facility is set to be constructed on a greenfield site on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, south of the Red Sea-facing city of Yanbu al-Bahr.
The project, scheduled for completion within 30 months, includes the full scope of design, engineering, supply, construction, and commissioning.
The plant will deploy Dual Media Filters (DMF), followed by a two-pass reverse osmosis process and remineralisation to ensure high-quality potable water.

The Saudi Water Authority is at the center of regulating and enhancing the sustainability of the water sector in Saudi Arabia.
It oversees more than 40 desalination plants that collectively produce over 11 million cubic meters per day and manages over 139 ground and surface water purification stations, which produce an additional 4 million cubic meters per day.
